Porter Mill Sauvignon Blanc 2007 (2 bottles)
The famous grape variety that Sancerre and Pouilly Fume is made from. Now grown around the world, it tends to thrive in locations that mimic its original home in the Loire Valley in France. It favours slightly cooler growing conditions and this refreshing example is grown at altitude near Malmsbury in the Swartland region of The Cape. This wine has a lovely restrained passion fruit and green apple freshness with a gentle mineral finish on the palate. It offers exceptional value for money.
Trivento Viognier 2006 (2 bottles)
Viognier is probably best known as the grape that provides the fruit for top quality and expensive French Northern Rhone white wines such as Condrieu. It’s a difficult and fickle grape to grow. As such, many growers in Europe gave up, and this lovely tasty variety became difficult to find. Modern winemakers realised the potential of this intriguing variety with it’s delicious aromatics, peach and apricot notes. With careful vineyard positioning its true worth is now being realised. It is grown in the South of France and around the wine world. Our example comes from the Trivento (Three Winds) winery situated just outside Mendoza in the foothills of the Andes in Argentina. Grown at a very high altitude, the pure climate is ideal for lovely aromatic white grape varieties. Delicious flavours of white peach and pear, with a lively crisp acidity makes this a treat on its own or with salads and white meats.
Jurancon Sec 2005 Clos Guirouilh (2 bottles)
A little known French wine from the gourmet heartland of South West France. Monsieur Guirouilh’s vineyards have been ‘in the family’ since the 1600’s! The sweet wine from this lovely region, just South of Pau was the wine that christened the Kings and Queens of France before Sauternes was even planted. We are offering the dry white from this exceptional property. Made from Gros Manseng grapes picked when ripe but with good acidity this is a lovely complex wine with the aroma of white flower, and a touch of concentrated ripe pear and honey flavours. A lovely aperitif wine, which is delicious with roasted poultry.
Case-2: Red Wines
Chateau Juvenal Cotes du Ventoux 2006 (2 bottles)
Mont Ventoux dominates the landscape of the Southern Rhone, it’s the highest mountain in the region. Its rocky top looks like it has snow on it even on the hottest summer’s day. It is actually the light exposed rock which reflects the sun, but you can ski in the winter! Our wine is from an exceptional property on the southern slopes of the mountain. Grenache and Syrah grapes flourish here and can produce exceptional Cotes du Rhone style wines. Chateau Juvenal produces a tasty raspberry / mure fruit flavour with grilled herb and bright mineral notes. Perfect with spicy foods, lamb, and pork dishes. Close your eyes and one could be in Chateauneuf du Pape country!
Quinta do Portal Colheita 2005 (2 bottles)
Quinta do Portal are a comparatively young company in Portugal’s stunning Douro valley region; the world famous home to port. Whilst they produce some first class port they specialise in unfortified table wines using traditional Portuguese varieties. Unusually for the northern hemisphere a large amount of their vineyards are north facing, which slows the ripening process in the scorching summer heat. The result is a wine that combines the dusty tannins, dark berry and savoury notes typical of wines produced from the port varieties Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz with fresh balancing acidity. A great food wine, especially with roast meats or a nice bit of steak.
Clos Montblanc Syrah 2004 (2 bottles)
The Conca de Barbera is a wine region within Catalonia. Situated around 160 kilometres from Barcelona, in the highlands en route to Zaragoza. It’s an ancient land where some of the finest grapes are grown in Northern Spain. French varietals have flourished here for many years, indeed France is not too far away on the ‘other side’ of the Pyrenees mountains. This lovely wine is made by Josep Vadri at the winery just outside the ancient walled village of Mont Blanc. Deep, dense damson fruit Syrah fruit of the highest quality and the skilful use of both French and American barrels has resulted in a memorable wine which embraces both old and new traditions. Rich and intense with lovely toasted spiciness on the finish.
